ChinaLookout, is the brainchild of two concerned parents that found themselves lacking a single source of news regarding the safety of Chinese made products. Although both private and public organizations keep track of certified and approved recalls this information is not always easily accessible to the common person. It may be somewhat easy to for anybody find a list of recalled products for a specific toy company in their website, but this information is in no way related or connected to, for example, faulty tires that may be mounted in your car.
We realize that this situation is a result of how scattered this information is, and that keeping track of all of it would be extremely difficult for a single individual, thus, the creation of this social network.

traveling and living

May partner and I are going to be moving back to Beijing after being gon for a long time. Traveling to BJ via HK and looking for people's houses to stay for one or two nights instead of hotels so as to save some money. We won't be leaving the US until Aug. Any help greatly appreachiated.

looking for people in Nanjing

Have been in Nanjing for the past 6 months(guess its been longer now). Almost all my friends have moved back home, and I am looking for people to hang with or what ever. Teach right now. Don't do the bar thing a whole lot. Startin' to hate Nanjing. Want to move back to Beijing.

yunnan, tibet pilgrimage

i am about to depart on a journey to tibet, via thailand, lao, and yunnan. do any of you have any suggestions about crossing from yunnan into tibet by land, crucial points along the way, and the current state aquiring tibetan permits. also, anyone knows where to get good tea in yunnan, i'd be most grateful.

Coming to Beijing in Jan

relocating to Shanghai

Hi!
It seems i may be about to accept a job as an English Teacher in Shanghai.
So i'm looking for any advice people have about making the move.
What to bring/not to bring? Things to prepare in advance before i leave the US?
For example: i don't have any health insurance right now. Do you think i'll need some kind of traveler's insurance or something before i go?

Also, speaking as a Freak about to invade China. How much do i need to worry about what i look at online, or amuse myself with in private? In a city as big as Shanghai, will i have to be careful not to be seen as a wild and crazy foreign devil? Can i have fun at a club on the weekend and not get in trouble with my neighbors for coming home at 4am?

Beijing Buddhists?

Howdy Folks,
Just curious if there are any folks in Beijing that might be interested in joining a Buddhism discussion group i'm starting up. I've met up with a few chinese and laowai's that are interested in meeting up on a weekly basis. I thought this might be a good place to put out feelers to see if there might be any other people in the area who would be interested in meeting up for talks. We are considering basing the discussion on Patrul Rinpoche's "Words of my Perfect Teacher." We've yet to determine a place or time as it will be based on the schedules and locations of the members. Lemme know if you wanna join up.

A travel agency in Korea for Jeju hotel deals

I'm traveling in a month to Jeju for a four day/three night excursion. I want to stay in a fancy hotel for a lower price...the Shilla, Lotte, Hyatt. Does anyone know any good travel agencies to go through that could get me a deal.

I've tried internet sites but they seem to be a sort of "take what you can get" situation where you have no control over room, smoking/non-smoking, view, or even bed selection in the room. I'd like to get something nice without having to pay $1000. USD.

National Holiday

Howdy everyone,
I arrived in Beijing about a week ago for work. I'm currently trying to figure out what to do during the national holiday, since it appears to be the longest opportunity i'll have for traveling while I'm here. I'm particularly interested in doing some trekking if possible and I figured this would be a good place to ask about good places to trek. I've heard that tiger leaping gorge down in Yunan province is quite beautiful. Any suggestions from you more experienced folks? If anybody else is interested in going trekking, perhaps we could organize a trip together. I'm easy like Sunday morning.

I'm coming to beijing for a month in mid july to teach english and work on my mandarin. I've been considering moving to China from SF for awhile and hope to use this trip to test the waters. For anyone living in China, especially beijing, I'd love to hear about what life is like for you.

What sort of work do you do?
Do you speak mandarin or not? at what level?
In beijing, how should one go about finding info
on housing?
best and worst aspects of the culture to you.
anything else you might consider useful...
