Hi!
It seems i may be about to accept a job as an English Teacher in Shanghai.
So i'm looking for any advice people have about making the move.
What to bring/not to bring? Things to prepare in advance before i leave the US?
For example: i don't have any health insurance right now. Do you think i'll need some kind of traveler's insurance or something before i go?
Also, speaking as a Freak about to invade China. How much do i need to worry about what i look at online, or amuse myself with in private? In a city as big as Shanghai, will i have to be careful not to be seen as a wild and crazy foreign devil? Can i have fun at a club on the weekend and not get in trouble with my neighbors for coming home at 4am?

Fri, July 8, 2005 - 6:03 PMI agree with being freaky.. I lived in Beijing for a year, and there were lots of weirdos out at night..
And you certainly won't get in trouble for looking at stuff on the net. However, I noticed that if I frequented strange sites, they would become mysteriously blocked about 3 weeks later. One option is using something like JAP (for mac), which is a program that lets you search the internet anonymously.. It makes the internet think you're in Germany, and therefore, you can look at all the weird websites you want.
I think there's a pc version called anonymouse? That's a guess tho.
I had traveller's insurance from Canada when I was in China. I thought it was necessary. If you're getting a legit job tho, your school might maybe offer you health insurance? I'm not sure how legit things work in China. =)
Anyway, have fun in Shanghai!

Thu, July 21, 2005 - 1:32 PMWell, i'd like to think the job is legit. They do not offer insurance though. Does that mean that i won't be covered under the national program?
