Re: Need a Job ..(I DO)
Sun, August 21, 2005 - 8:12 AMI think my school here in Shanghai is still looking for people, however, i'm not sure i can recommend it.
It's just getting started (opened in May), and has some of the expected growing pains.
If you are interested, the US contact is here: www.hawthornconsultants.com/
(be aware, the ad promises health insurance, but the contract won't)
This is the school's Chinese webpage. I can't read it, but perhaps you can?
www.bhpx.com/
May i ask why you are looking for a new job? I thought you liked yours? -

Re: Need a Job ..(I DO)
Sun, August 21, 2005 - 7:10 PMHi and Thanks
My contract is finished in Fuzhou and I just need a change of scenery , plus Im looking to learn more Chinese medicine, plus i want to be nearer a cool city to play with my band.
hmm i take your 'not recommending" as a warning kindov..
but may I ask .. do they pay over 6000rmb?
that what i get here and the cost of living is much lower.
thanks again

Re: Need a Job ..(I DO)
Sun, August 21, 2005 - 9:17 PMI just don't know whether things will improve, or devolve as the school settles down to business so far.
Personally, i LOVE teaching, and being in the classroom, but i haven't had much chance to yet, as we've been writing lesson plans, and doing promotional work so far. Supposedly we're moving to a more central location (ala People's Square area) from our current one in Zhabei (more industrial/residential) sometime in September.
As for salary, the first month is probationary, and only about 5000rmb, but then it goes up to 6400 after that. But the apartment is free, and is a perfectly acceptable place (in my opinion), which is worth a lot in Shanghai, where rent takes the biggest chunk out of one's paycheck.
So far, i have yet to hear of a school in China that ANYONE can recommend working in, especially in the big cities. It seems like Chinese administration doesn't treat any employees as well as Americans are used to being treated. The Chinese employees seem to take a lot worse than the foreign teachers, even, and Like it!
I still haven't signed a contract (haven't been asked to yet), so i'll see how things go once i'm locked in. The other foreign teacher here seems ok with stuff, but gets grumpy at lastminute schedule changes, which seem the norm here.
Feel free to ask any other questions. I've only been here 2 weeks though, so i'm not sure what will change in the future. -

Re: Need a Job ..(I DO)
Tue, September 27, 2005 - 3:49 AMThere's always New Oriental in Beijing/other locations in China.. I worked there for a while when I was in China.. Pretty average as far as employment situation goes.. A bit annoying, but I always got paid on time/had my classes. Wages range from 100-200RMB/hour, depending on what you're doing.
They got the contract to train all the employees English for the 2008 Olympics, so I imagine they won't say no to teachers... -
